Nintendo Switch Surpasses 100 million Consoles Lifetime for Q3 FY 2022

Nintendo Switch climbing up mountain for DS
Watch out DS, the Switch is coming for you!!

As a publicly-traded company whose primary business operation is videogames, Nintendo releases software and hardware sales regularly. Here is the website of the latest financial statement for the third quarter of the 2021/22 fiscal year.

3rd Quarter FY 2021/22
Switch Hardware: 10.67 million
Switch Software: 179.29 million

Lifetime to Date (LTD)
Switch Hardware: 103.54 million
Switch Software: 766.41 million

As you can see with the lifetime to date number, Nintendo finally did it, it became the fourth Nintendo hardware ever to surpass one hundred million units. At 103.54 million LTD is surpasses the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 1 in just under five years. As of February 3, 2022, the Nintendo Switch is the third highest-selling Nintendo console ever. Nintendo Switch could catch up to the Nintendo Game Boy (and Sony PlayStation 4) quickly since the console is still selling incredibly well, hugely different sales curve than numerous Nintendo consoles whose sales tend to fall off a cliff in the fourth year. Another remarkable thing is the extraordinary software sales of the Nintendo Switch. With 766.41 million units of sales, which Nintendo counts as software with a retail box (yes, they do not count digital-only software sales on their number), it is the third highest best software sales ever, right below the Nintendo Wii with 921.85 million software sales, and the current titan, the Nintendo DS with 948.76 million software sales (Nintendo, 2022). At the rate the switch is selling software, it is going to easily be the first Nintendo console to break 1 billion software sales.

Nintendo DS: 154,020,000 LTD
Nintendo Game Boy: 118,690,000 LTD
Nintendo Switch: 103,540,000 LTD
Nintendo Wii: 100,630,000 LTD
Nintendo Game Boy Advance: 81,510,000 LTD
Nintendo 3DS: 75,940,000 LTD
Nintendo Entertainment System: 61,910,000 LTD
Super Nintendo Entertainment System: 49,100,000 LTD
Nintendo 64: 32,930,000 LTD
Nintendo GameCube: 21,750,000 LTD
Wii U: 13,560,000 LTD

The Nintendo Switch surpassed the Nintendo 3DS in 3.75 years, which is impressive considering that it took 8 years for the 3DS to reach that number. It surpassed the Game Boy Advance by its fourth year, making it the fourth highest-selling Nintendo Hardware ever. With Monster Hunter Rise and a strong 3rd party, slate meant that the Switch surpassed the Nintendo Wii and got past the 100 million mark by the end of the 2021 calendar year. With an incredibly strong game lineup for 2022, the Nintendo Switch will easily pass the Nintendo Game Boy before the end of 2022.

What about 2022?

Smash Bros Ultimate Continues to Sell
2022 is an odd situation because Nintendo cannot make a Switch Pro console without running into the huge chip shortage issue that currently pervades the world. Nintendo in November 2021 stated that the supply issues of chips will affect the production of the console (BBC News, 2021). If Nintendo produces some soft of a higher-end model with more modern chips, it will no doubt be impossible to find since it is a mix of an incredibly desirable console with an inability to produce anywhere near enough consoles to satiate demand. “Switch is just in the middle of its lifecycle and the momentum going into this year is good,” said Furukawa, asserting that “the Switch is ready to break a pattern of our past consoles that saw momentum weakening in their sixth year on the market and grow further (Mochizuki, 2022).” Per Takashi Mochizuki’s reporting, the Nintendo Switch is going to have the longest lifecycle of any modern Nintendo console. Even if Nintendo releases a “pro” or “2” in 2023 or 2024, they will continue to support the Switch with Nintendo consoles long afterward. The Nintendo Switch will challenge the crown of the highest-selling Nintendo console ever, and it will have the highest-selling software number ever before the end of 2022. Compared to past Nintendo hardware, the Nintendo Switch has an exceptionally strong game lineup that includes games like Triangle Strategy, Kirby, Splatoon 3, Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel, and there are rumblings that a new Xenoblade and Fire Emblem is coming in the wings soon.

Now the #2 Pokemon Ever
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to defy gravity, selling 43.35 million units. It is continuing to set records as the highest-selling exclusive of all time. Nintendo would do well to keep Mario Kart 9 in the wings for the Nintendo Switch 2 launch to ensure that the next Nintendo console will sell another 100 million units. Pokémon continues to make records, with Sword and Shield officially becoming the second highest-selling Pokémon game ever. We just got the news a couple of minutes ago that Pokémon Legends: Arceus sold 6.5 million copies in under a week, setting a new series record. Well-deserved since Pokemon Legends: Arceus is probably the best Pokémon game ever made.
