Convention Survival Guide - Lexicon of Convention Vernacular

Image
Vernacular is defined as the language or vocabulary peculiar to a particular class or profession. In the Anime and Manga industry, there is a rich vocabulary that is used over the course of a convention that can be quite esoteric to people who are unfamiliar with its terminology. Even to people who are used to the hobby or anime or manga, there is a vernacular that is used only during an anime convention. I will explore the second part of my convention survival guide to discuss convention vernacular. It will be separated in a couple of different classes: industry terminology, fan terminology, and convention terminology. I hope that you can look through this and learn a thing or two from the second part of my survival guide. Industry Terminology Anime!! Anime: Anime is defined as animation coming from Japan. In many western countries, Anime is the short version of "Japanese Animation." The characteristic style that most people consider the "anime style" was

Convention Survival Guide - Preparing for a Con for 3-4 Days

An anime convention can be daunting since there is so much to do. Being in an anime convention the entire time requires plenty of planning. When you go to a convention for 3-4 days and stay in the convention site during the entire time, you have to prepare to make sure that you have the right stuff. As a person who has been going to anime conventions for the past seven years, I have a couple of tips to survive and enjoy the con to its fullest. Necessities Dental Care (Toothbrush, Toothpaste, and Floss): When you go to an anime convention, having a toothbrush and a bottle of toothpaste is a necessity. First off, going to an anime convention without brushing your teeth isn't good for everyone around you. When you see people with contorted faces whenever you open your mouth, you know that you may need to brush your teeth. Secondly, brushing your teeth and flossing is good for your health. Your 60-year old self will thank you for keeping your teeth clean when you go to an anime c

Review: K-On Volume #1 (Blu-Ray)

K-On! Directed by: Yaoko Yamaka Screenplay: Reiko Yoshida Based on the Manga Written by: Kakifly Animation Studio: Kyoto Animation Studio USA Publisher: Bandai Entertainment Episode: 1-4 Mugi, Mio, and Ritsu K-On is about four girls who join their school’s Light Music Club before it gets disbanded. A seemingly modest story concept would become a multimillion dollar franchise with a legion of followers across the world. When K-On was first announced in 2009, no one expected it to become the enormous franchise it is today. Originally starting as a 4 panel manga in a seinen magazine, it transitioned into anime where it exploded in popularity. In Anime Expo 2010, Bandai Entertainment announced that they would be releasing K-On in the United States. The first volume containing the first four episodes has finally been released in the states. The series looks incredible in its Blu-ray iteration, with a great script, gorgeous animation, a cast of likable characters, memorable music

Tokyopop Publishing Folds: Why did it happen?

Image
Today, the manga industry has been rocked by huge news. As reported by multiple sources , Tokyopop will be folding its publishing arm in the United States on May 31st. The company was founded in 1997 and published Sailor Moon in the United States. Sailor Moon was the first manga in the United States to hit a million sales. In 2003, they published Love Hina and Chobits unflipped. The low price point, combined with a wide retail release, along with a untapped market led to huge sales. Tokyopop is largely responsible for the "Manga Boom" that would see manga grow from a small market to a force in the industry. They have been in rocky waters with a lack of focus, an increase in competition, losing a large licensor and a shrinking manga market. What went wrong?
